My third day observation: My first day to practise teaching
Today I was doing my practise teaching, and the subject which I have choosen for my teaching was the Community study. As a new beginner to teach infront of children I was a bit nervous to carry out this teaching practise, but luckly I gain a self confidence which motivates myself to proceed my lesson. Firstly, I took a deep breath and start doing a short introduction of myself, and the subject that I was going to teach them. I could see that children were very happy to get to know me well as they were sitting down patiently. After introducing myself, I begin with telling the children to sing a song entitled "when I rise up in the morning". When the song finished I took out a small green ball in my hand and start throwing it a little bit in the air, I let them imagine that the small ball is a hot potatoe, and once I give to another will pass it to another because they dont want to let it burn their hand. Children were a bit confused of the game and some took the game seriously saying "ohh..its not hot", I show them again that its just an imagination of an hot potatoe so they laughed. While standing up doing the potatoe game, chldren throw and pass the ball and shouting out the new words that they have learnt from yesterday's lesson. For example: father, mother, sister, brother. they really enjoy the game and most importanly they recall what they learnt from yesterday's same topic which is on family. Afterward, I told the children to sit down so they all sat down. I introduce my topic which is "the time" or "Te Tai", I took out flash cards and start sticking them out on the black board. Children were engaged while I was introducing and explaining the three times of the day which are "te moaningabong, te tawanou ao te tairiki", they start yelling out their answers, and putting up their hands for me to pick them to show that they know what we were discussing. I experience one kind of issue in here because while I was discussing with many students there were some who sit at the back who didnt listern and they were hiding under the desks. I now realize that I should apply a different teaching strategy that will make them listern later on my next teaching. Once we finished the short introduction of the topic, I took out a chart which titled "te toko" or "the learning outcome" I placed it on the board and read with the children what the learning outcomes of today's lesson. Children were interested to read with me and know that this is what we going to obtain by the end of our this class. When we finish the introduction of the topic, I quickly explain our group work activity which was going to be very fun and enjoyable. I pass over plain papers with different indicators of the time "the first rise of the sun" which indicate the first apearance of the morning, the next paer was had an image of "the big round sun" which indicates "te tawanou" and the last paper with images of "the moon and stars" which indicate the night time. There were two children in one paper and they stick these images to their plain papers and colouring them. I could see that they were busy with the activity and they create other drawings beside and down the indicators of the day time. I was amazed that these children could make up their own colourings and other pictures inside their papers, most importanly they learn the different times of the day and what they could predict when its morning, evening and afternoon. The classroom was noisy and children were all participating in their works. I could see that their were some student who hate working with another peer because they get agry with eachother because of different ideas on what to put on their group work activity.
